nabil nayal lecture

Nabil Nayal: Slides from a lecture

Showing the actual process he uses in projects

Powerpoint presentation slides from a lecture with Nabil Nayal. I really like the themes surrounding his work such as; abruption and irruption, as I think its similar to my theme of decay. I also like that he presents the themes with-in his garments by using frayed edges and panelling.

A collection of Nabils that stood out to me the most was his collaboration with the British Library. I like the way he has written over the toile and the inky effect that is created. I think that the way he has dyed the toile creates an aged effect like an old book. I also like how Nabil heavily focuses on historical references and extensive research.

bruce nauman

Bruce Nauman- Film and Projector Work

One of my favourite instillation pieces by Nauman called 'Violent Incidents'. I like how manic the piece feels through the screens being stacked on top of each other. I also like how the videos are played on loops.

A YouTube video of the instillation piece

Another projector piece of Nauman's called 'Walks in Walks Out'. I like how he plays with layering videos to create the illusion that he's walking in and out of the space. I would like to play with illusion in my project - possibly through the development of decay.

Another film piece called 'Washing Hands Normal'. I like how he has stacked the monitors on top of each other, similar to 'violent incidents', to covey the feelings of anxiety and obsessive behaviour. I would like to experiment creating emotions through video.

worn stories

Netflix Documentary: Worn Stories

A Netflix series called 'Worn Stories' which focuses on the stories of garments that are important to people. I like that it allows people to tell their story and how it presents the idea that garments can hold can be imbued with an essence of a person or has the power of association to take you back to a moment in time.

A YouTube video of a trailer for the series

My favourite story from the series, about a one of the kind coat that gets given to the wrong person at a New York restaurant. Shows the journey of them running around New York to get it back. I like the animation that they use to tell the story. I really like the idea of getting a range of different people to tell stories about garments. I also like how the creators of the documentary portray the importance of a garment to a person which is what I would like to translate into my work

tracey emin my bed

An article about Tracey Emin's 'My Bed'

An article from 25th of October 1999 by The Guardian.

After previously researching Tracey Emins 'My Bed' I was explaining in a crit about how she has influenced my ideas. I was told about the her work being destroyed as part of a performance piece by two men who jumped on the bed semi- naked having a pillow fight .

I like the idea of them destroying the memory.

I want to explore the idea of destroying objects associated with memories and creating new objects from them to present the change in life

the endowment effect

The Endowment Effect

I wanted to get a deeper understanding into why we feel so attached to garments and objects so I began to research into the phycology behind it and I found the Endowment Effect.
